Dear Wester Family: It’s amazing how quickly this year is flying by! Here at Wester we have been doing great things with your assistance and support! Look at what’s been happening! MEMBERSHIP First, I would like to share some numbers with you. Wester PTA membership numbers for 2008-2009 are up by 158 members. Right now we have 636 PTA members. We have qualified for several membership awards as well. Wester qualified for the Golden Apple Award for having 100% staff participation, the500 Club Achievement for having 500 or more members, the 10% Increase Achievement Award for increasing our membership total by 10% or more, and the Early Bird Award for getting our dues in early. Many thanks to Anita Moore, our Membership Chairman for a job well done! DONATIONS Secondly, thanks to each of you, our donation drive was a huge success! Our PTA donations totaled just under $5,000; last year our donations were about $3,500. This is a 43% increase in giving. Thank you for your support and commitment to Wester PTA! PTA DOLLARS AT WORK The third thing I wanted to share with you is where your PTA dollars are at work at Wester. With the money we have raised so far this year, we were able to buy 6 LCD Projectors, one projector for each Science classroom. We also purchased 2 Document Cameras for the Science Department, one for 7th grade and one for 8th grade. The LCD Projectors allow things from the computer to be broadcast onto a large screen on the wall, so students can see things much better instead of having to gather around a small computer screen or a small television set. The document cameras take a picture of whatever you point it at and also project it on the screen on the wall. The Science Department tells me that both of these technology enhancements will greatly help in classroom presentations. Your generosity made this possible! TEACHER & VETERAN APPRECIATION EVENTS In October, our teachers enjoyed a wonderful soup and salad lunch provided by those of you who volunteered to help with Teacher Appreciation. Thanks also to Black Eyed Pea for donating the soup for the luncheon. Our teachers and staff raved about all the good food! Thanks for treating the Wester staff and for making them feel valued and appreciated. Thank you also to the many people who brought food for the Veteran’s Day breakfast. We fed over 75 service men and women. The program that the Wester students put on to honor the veterans was outstanding. We extend many thanks to Mrs. Stroud and Mrs. Raines for their leadership in putting on this special program. On December 17th, PTA will host a catered holiday lunch for the Wester staff. STUDENT DIRECTORY Our Directory Chairman, Erica Cunningham, has finished inputting all the information for the Wester Student Directory. We are in the process of proofing the Directory and hope to have it published and in your hands soon. COOKIES & BOOK FAIR Freaky Friday, is doing great things with Caroline Shelton’s leadership. We are selling cookies, sodas, candy and snacks every Friday and making money to do things for Wester. If you would like to help with either baking cookies or selling, please contact Caroline Shelton. We recently finished the Wester Book Fair, chairman, Melony Harmon, did a great job and we earned $350 in free books for the Wester library! HOODIES & YARD SIGNS We are just finishing up our hoodie sales. Our Spirit Chairman, Tara Wetli, has been busy delivering the many orders we have already taken. The hoodies are gray with a blue and black Wester Wildcat imprint, and are $20 each. A last chance flyer to buy hoodies went home this week. We have the Wester Wildcat yard signs for sale too, they are $10 each and come with the stand to mount them in your yard. SOCIAL Look for more information after the first of the year on the PTA sponsored Social which will take place in February. Our Social Chairman, Andi Frizzell, is busy working to put together a great event, with cool music, food and prizes! REFLECTIONS & CLOTHES CLOSET The judging of our Reflections entries, that’s PTA’s cultural art program, came to a close and chairman, Stephannie Waller, was pleased to take the entries that would advance to the district level of competition. Look for more information on that later. Wester’s work day at the MISD Council PTA Clothes Closet, took place in November. Chairman, Elizabeth Cummins, staffed it with parent volunteers from Wester. Thanks for making our Clothes Closet day a success! The Clothes Closet is a place where students in need can go to get clothes, shoes and socks, coats and even backpacks. If your family needs help with clothes, please contact our School Counselor, School Nurse, or one of our Assistant Principals. As you can see, there’s lots of great things happening at Wester! We wish each of you a blessed holiday season! If you ever have any questions or comments regarding PTA, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your support and for allowing me the privilege of serving you and your student at Wester! It’s great to be a wildcat! God bless! Denise Wilkens Wester PTA President
